What Could be done to Cope up with Children Suffering from Mental Illnesses?

Just like adults, children are also likely to develop mental health conditions. But the hardest part is, it is difficult for the parents to identify if their child has a mental condition or not. According to the studies, it has been known that nearly one in five children has a mental illness that can deteriorate the quality of their lives significantly. If your child is showing an abrupt behaviour, it could be a red signal that your child may be suffering from a mental condition.

Indications Your Child May Have a Mental Condition

Children who develop mental conditions express differently. Mentioned below is a range of emotions or habits shown by children with mental illnesses.

Anxiety Disorder- Though it is normal for every child to experience anxiety disorders. But when a child exhibits too much anxiety in his behaviour, it could be a sign that he needs support. Anxiety disorders such as OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc can make it difficult for the children to function normal in their lives.

Eating Disorders- Eating disorders such as binge-eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, etc are life-threatening conditions. Children who have eating disorders remain preoccupied with food, as a result they put on the excess amount of weight.

Mood changes- If your child is exhibiting severe mood swings that is causing problems in relationships at school or home, it could be a clear sign that your child is suffering from mental disorders.

Loss of Appetite- If your child had a sudden loss of appetite or is suffering from frequent vomiting, it could indicate an eating disorder. As compared to adults, children with mental health conditions develop stomach ache, headaches etc.

Suicidal Thoughts- In several cases, children with mental conditions cause self-harm such as cutting or burning themselves. They may also develop suicidal thoughts or attempt to commit a suicide.

Those were several symptoms exhibited by children suffering from mental conditions. If you are concerned about the health of your child, we recommend you to consult a doctor immediately by describing the behaviour of your children. You can also talk to your child’s close friends, teachers or caregivers to get a better idea about the changes in your child’s behaviour.
